General Diving Comments-Dive Locations

It is unfortunate that Gilboa Quarry in Gilboa, Ohio has chosen to continue their rude and offensive policies toward divers. I will no longer support, dive or teach at Gilboa. Unbelievable costs, paperwork and "police" type oversight have offended my students and friends on a repetitive basis. Finally, after calling the Sheriff's office to report a mother and her three-year old daughter for trespassing(she only dropped off her husband and joined us at the campsite near front gate for a few minutes) my students were appalled and mad. She finally paid $12.00/day for about 30 minutes on the property. Six dollars for her daughter/per day!!!!!

With four pages of rules, tremendous paperwork and costs that are awful, the owners continue to be abrasive and unfriendly. I encourage every diver to consider other sites for their dive adventures. Diving is fun, and I love to teach. However, after diving the world, caves and technical wrecks I have never experienced such treatment..and I am finished with the quarry. The owners should apologize and sell the operation so we may dive a deep and well-stocked quarry again.

  1. Continued Discussion: I have been amazed at the response from divers with respect to the boycott of Gilboa Quarry. We need to vote our lack of confidence and support with our money-an issue that the owners of Gilboa will understand.

  3. There are several problems with the above post:

1st- the 3 year old was never charges as 5 and under get in free.

2nd- the lady was there all day the day before and never paid and was there alot more than 30 minutes the second day.

3rd- there are only 2 pages of paper work.

Gilboa is a great quarry. The staff have always been very friendly to me. All they ask is for everyone to follow the rules. The rules are there for a reason. They are there to hgelp keep everyone safe!!!

As far as the costs go, if you got into the sport of diving and thought you were going to do it with little money then someone misinformed you. But i do not feel that they over charge at all. The quarry is clean, well mantained and new sits are always being put in the quarry for the divers.
How many quarries can say that regularly divers come from Canada and all over the U.S.A. and the world to dive at gilboa. Hardley a weekend goes by without Canadians are at gilboa diving and from all over the country!!!!

    Dive Gilboa! I Will!!

  4. I would certainly have to agree with Harold. Docs Diving LLC must have been at a different quarry. I have been going to Gilboa Quarry for the past 10 years. The staff is a bunch of hard working individuals who try to make Gilboa the best diving site. They have come a long way since 1999. I am not sure who you encountered, but they have always been friendly to me!!

As an instructor, you need to educate your students about the sport of diving, including the environments and dive sites they will be encountering. I tell my students that the 2 pages of rules are there to help protect them. They understand that and want to be protected.

As for the cost . . . I have no problem paying a little extra knowing that I am getting my money's worth. How many other quarries (or other dive sites) are actively enhancing their site? Gilboa sure does! Every time I visit, there is something new that they have done to improve the quarry.

It sounds like Docs Diving is a little haphazard with their story. What exactly are you teaching your students if your story published here is inconsistent with the truth? What other stories have been told??

Maybe Docs Diving needs to apologize to Gilboa Quarry.

I have read this story and i am sure the true side of the story will come out. There is always two sides.
I am a PADI instructor and owner of a scuba store. I have over 2500 hrs in diving. I have been up and down the east coast in every quarry,in florida caves, wreck diving and all kinds of water and i can say without a dought Gilboa quarry is a safe and best quarry around for you new and old divers.
The owners of the quarry invest there income back into there business unlike other quarry. They own there business and do not rent or least it.Like scuba teach the quarry is a business and has rules and policy to go by. If docs diving and there customers don't want to follow those rules then they need to go elsewhere. As a collage educator and a professional scuba instructor he should be teaching and supporting Gilboa quarry rules but maybe he's not a professional instructor. As a independent instructor he has nothing invested in this sport and is only pocketing your money. We as professional business owner and instructors should support others in our sport.
As far as paper work there is only two pages to fill out that is good for one year. You have four pages to fill out if you are teaching PADI before you get in a class. So whats his problem.Because of docs diving we all have more forms to always fill out!
As for the cost there again a independent and a non business owner has NO clue the cost today of running a business.
Docs diving should apologize to Gilboa quarry and there staff. They do alot of work for us.
I would like to thank them all and will support them. Thank you UWI

  6. Ya you have freedom of speech but for a so called professional instructor in scuba this is childish. Gilboa quarry is a safe and best place to learn scuba. We in the industry sure don't need customers and independent instructors trying to get free scuba.Gilboa quarry even put in electrical service to support Docs diving and this the respect they give back. Thanks doc i use your electrical.
In closing just another customer trying to get something free and a instructor support her. GET REAL!!!

  8. There's no doubt about it, Gilboa is a fantastic place to dive (once you get through the checkpoint, past the Nazi owner and into the water...)
